A Franco-Egyptian wonder

Mobinil and the Orange Foundation have joined forces to support the creation of an opera, Les Jours et les Nuits de l’Arbre Coeur (The Days and Nights of the Heart Tree), performed by an orchestra of young, blind Egyptian women and composed by Tarik Benouarka.

Ehab Badawy, Egyptian Ambassador to France, opened the press conference on 8 October with these words: "Tarik Benouarka’s opera "Les Jours et les Nuits de l’arbre cœur" is a Franco-Egyptian wonder. It carries a strong message about women’s role in Egyptian society. This new work illustrates the human capacity to overcome challenges. Culture is deeply important to Egypt and we are proud to see it shine in France and beyond."

Tarik Benouarka, the opera’s composer

This Arabic-language opera-ballet, composed by Tarik Benouarka, blends symphonic music, singing, dance, poetry and video. A Western musical style is subtly infused with Eastern influences. The text transports the audience, with its sensual and universal depictions of love, life, and inner richness of human life.

This original modern creation is dedicated to and performed by El nour wal Amal, an orchestra composed of blind Egyptian women - the only one of its kind. El nour wal Amal, founded in Cairo in 1961, is a 40-member ensemble, made up of blind female musicians, which performs Classical and Arabic music and tours worldwide. The international premiere of the opera "Les Jours et les Nuits de l’arbre cœur" was given at the Cairo Opera on 30 September, with support from Orange’s Egyptian subsidiary Mobinil. It will be performed on Thursday 5 November at the Salle Gaveau in Paris, and from January 2016 in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

An international tour of North Africa, Europe and the Middle East is also planned.
