Digital technology: an asset for Miléna’s future

Over the course of several weeks, Miléna took part in various sessions of the Together for Youth integration programme at the Mission Locale in Metz. Far from the cliché of the digital native, she discovered the importance of digital technology when looking for work.

Miléna’s schooling was not exactly easy. After earning her middle school certificate, she opted for a vocational course in cooking, from which she graduated. Unfortunately, the sector did not suit her: "I’m no good in a kitchen." So she tried to retrain. But with no income, she was forced to find work to support herself.
At 21, and unemployed, she headed to the Mission Locale in Metz in spring 2015: "The Mission Locale is a bit like a job centre for young people. When I arrived, an adviser sat down with me to help me establish my career plan." Miléna chose sports and firefighting, two things she is passionate about. Unfortunately, these two options led to nothing and she was forced to start looking for work once again.

"Before, I had nothing to do with digital technology"

While looking for work, Miléna continued to go to the Mission Locale. She took our Together for Youth integration programme to help her master digital tools and optimise her job search. "Before, I had nothing to do with digital technology. When looking for work I did it the old-fashioned way. I wrote my cover letters and CVs by hand!"

Miléna couldn’t be further from our idea of young people as digital natives, perfectly at ease using digital technology. Her job search was negatively impacted by her lack of computer and IT skills. Through the training, she discovered essential websites to search for jobs online and learned how to nurture her online reputation: "On social networks, people can see and find out everything. I learned to be careful about what I share."

The digital education classes helped her to understand the importance of digital technology: "80% of job offers are "hidden". If I hadn’t found out about certain job sites, I would never have been able to apply for certain positions."

Growing in confidence with digital technology

Supported by Orange volunteers from the Orange Solidarity NGO, the lessons are developed with the beneficiaries. These were important discussions to understand the young peoples’ needs: "Before, nobody really asked what young people thought. They stuck us behind a desk, and we just had to take it. Now, with this training, the Orange trainers take our opinions into account and the courses are much more tailored to us."

The discussions and advice from the trainers also helped Miléna to regain self-confidence. After completing the programme’s various training modules, she was able to apply for many more jobs and found a job to pay her bills. Now, Miléna is aiming for the next stage: making a career out of her passion and finally achieving a sense of fulfilment.
