Gloire Amuli, on track to find a job with the Digital Centre

Gloire Amuli Mashuki is now 20, and is only just emerging from a traumatic event which happened three years ago. To regain confidence in herself, in life, and in other people, she is getting back on her feet through a training course at the Women’s Digital Centre. A new beginning.

A traumatic youth

Gloire was on holiday with her grand-parents when a group of men laid siege to their village and killed her grandfather, in 2014. The attack took place in South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. She was kidnapped and, with group of twelve girls, was held in sexual slavery in the jungle for several days. “We went through some very difficult times. After several sessions of negotiations with local officials, they let us go,” she told us.
“I was traumatized and, after the humiliation, I stayed at home for months, I couldn’t speak to anyone apart from my doctor.”

A new start with the Digital Centre

In October 2016, thanks to the Alpha Ujuvi collective, she discovered the Digital Centre programme: “I’d heard about the Digital Centre. I was interested in learning digital skills, and I decided to sign up. Over the course of a year, I tool modules in business, e-learning and IT skills to learn how to use online and digital tools. I am now on an internship with a graphic design firm".

Gloire trained at the Bukavu Digital Centre, which provides access to digital training, as well as modules in e-learning, business, and women’s rights to young women survivors of sexual violence in South Kivu.
These women, who are often traumatized, are offered coaching in personal skills and are provided with support in looking for jobs.

Forging ahead

“This training gave me confidence in myself, and I also hope, in the future, to be able to support young women who are survivors of sexual violence which, unfortunately, is frequent in the Great Lakes region, by setting up a centre for them.”
