In Madagascar the Solidarity FabLab opens its doors to the public

Inaugurated at the end of 2015, the Madagascar Solidarity FabLab has decided to extend its catchment. Initially limited to helping children sponsored by the SOS Children’s Villages charity, it can now welcome pupils and students from schools and universities in Antananarivo.

The Marimatra Solidarity FabLab was officially opened to the public on Tuesday 21 June, in the presence of the Minister for Post, Telecommunications and Digital Development, the Minister for Youth and Sport and other senior officials, as well as Josie Randriambeloma, President of Orange Solidarity Madagascar and Yannick Leroy, National director of SOS Children’s Villages Madagascar.

Located at the premises of SOS Children’s Villages in Andrainarivo, the Mamiratra Solidarity FabLab was originally intended mainly for children and young people cared for by SOS Children’s Villages Madagascar. It is now open to pupils and young people from the schools, institutes and universities of Antananarivo. Young people from different backgrounds can now be supported there in their transition to professional life, through introductory and training workshops on handling digitally controlled equipment.

From the series of speeches, it was very clear that development cannot be achieved without digital technology, which is certainly present in Madagascar. Professions related to digital technology are in high demand in today’s labour market. Thanks to the Solidarity FabLab, young people can develop sought-after skills and discover new ways to learn that are based on sharing, experimentation and exchange.

It’s an important opportunity for the young people of Madagascar, for whom access to digital technology is still limited.
