In Tours, a show of solidarity for the race participants

On 20 September, athletes and disabled runners gathered together to take part in the Tours 10 and 20km race and the Loire Valley marathon. A charity event supported by Orange volunteers.

Even the weather was on our side on 20 September for this popular event, which brought together 18,000 runners taking part in the various races including 3,000 schools. Crowd of locals cheered in the runners while the disabled and able-bodied participants finished the races at their own pace (2 hours, 12 minutes and 20 seconds for the winner of the marathon).

We were delighted to enrol 130 runners with disabilities (and their helpers). With Marie-Amélie Le Fur, patron of the event, and Serge Babary, Mayor of Tours, we started the marathon and the 10 and 20 Km races for the disabled participants. Around sixty volunteers assisted the 25 ADAPEI wheelchair using participants including Jérémie, the son of Jocelyne Gatien, manager of an Orange store. For the second year running, she is the driving force of the "tous ensemble dans la course" project, which was submitted as part of the Foundation’s call for projects 2014.

Among the runners sporting the Orange colours were two residents of the Notre-Dame-d’Oé retirement home - Claudine and Eliane, two young ladies in their late nineties! Catherine, who completed the 10 km in a wheelchair under her own steam, commented the day after: « Thank you for such a warm welcome in Tours. I can still hear the applause and words of encouragement in my head but my body is suffering from the effort! »

Orange volunteers, friends and family cheered on Claudine and Eliane.

A fantastic weekend of sport, encouragement, emotion and life. Values that we hold dear and try to pass on and promote at charity events such as the Tours 10 and 20km.
