MOOC A brief history of photography

Occasional photographer, lover of old photographs, frenetic instagrammer, collector of cameras… This new MOOC is intended for all those who are interested in photography, its history, its techniques and its great names. It also invites you to think about how photography is practised, to seek inspiration from great photographers to explore new paths.

Produced in partnership with Rmn-Grand Palais, this free-of-charge MOOC offers six sequences including understanding of the technical and historic aspects and the evolution of the processes that have helped spread photography in society. It also covers the major movements and authors and the pictures that have marked the history of photography.

Course starts 5 November 2018.

MOOC sequences:

  • Week 1: The beginnings of photography
  • Week 2: Photography in the twentieth century
  • Week 3: Photography from the 80s to the present
  • Week 4: Photography and news
  • Week 5: Photography beyond reality
  • Week 6: All photographers!

The MOOC A brief history of photography is an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the history of photography, from the emergence of the first processes to mass adoption with smartphones. The approach is both chronological and thematic.

In every sequence, there are some of the great names and iconic images from classic, modern and contemporary photography. Technique is also part of the programme. For example, there are pages devoted to instant photography, to Kodak and, of course, digital methods for taking and retouching photos.

The MOOC does not simply show you photography, it also invites you to practice it. Each sequence contains technical advice for controlling light, framing and colours. Regular challenges will allow participants to test their expertise and share their pictures on Instagram.

This MOOC is based on the expertise of the Rmn-Grand Palais photographic agency for both research and iconographic documentation and knowledge of the history of photography, partly illustrated on the site Arago. Expert and scientific proofreading was provided by Paul-Louis Roubert, President of the French Photographic Society (SFP) and a historian of photography.

Access to culture for all

With Rmn-Grand Palais, we have for a long time been committed to projects to spread knowledge to as many people as possible. After the MOOCs Impressionism, Picasso and A brief history of art, the MOOC A brief history of photography is the fourth jointly produced MOOC. Their success - more than 68,500 participants - shows the potential of digital technology in democratising access to knowledge and culture.

These previous MOOCs are now available free-of-charge and with no time limit in a form known as "Self-paced".
