Project Azahar: digital tools to help people with autism

Azahar is a set of digital leisure, communication and planning tools which aims to improve the quality of life of people with autism or intellectual disabilities.

The 10 applications in Azahar contain pictograms, glyphs, images and sounds that can be adapted to each user. Furthermore, Azahar can be customized by adding new pictograms, photos of family members and friends, as well as voices, etc. In addition to the 10 applications, the Azahar platform includes a tutorial tool, which family members or professionals can install on a computer or mobile device, so that the user can get the maximum benefit out of each of the applications.

The applications, as well as the user guide that provides instructions for their use, are downloadable free of charge on the project website: (available in Spanish, English,French and Polish).

Azahar, available for free, is based on Java technology and is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. A version adapted to mobile devices is also compatible with Windows Mobile 5 and 6. A version for Android and iOS (iPad/iPhone) is available in Spanish.

Azahar is inspired by the TEACCH philosophy to provide a clear and simple visual structure to people with autism.

The project is the result of the collaboration between the Valencia University in Spain and the Orange Foundation Spain. It was co-financed by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce. The Autismo Ávila and Autismo Burgos associations have also worked closely with the developers at each stage of the project in order to evaluate and test all of the applications. The Adapta Foundation is in charge of managing the free diffusion of Azahar via the project website.
