Results of the international call for digital projects 2013

Following the success of the Orange Digital Solidarity calls for projects in 2012, the Orange Foundation decided to renew its commitment to projects using digital technology to develop innovative solutions in health and education in 2013.

This new international call for projects, which opened in June 2013, is founded on the conviction that digital technology is an extraordinary lever for development, with which new opportunities for solidarity can be conceived, in order to provide assistance to disadvantaged populations across the world.

 orange digital solidarityThe Selection Committee, which met on 30 July at the Foundation’s head-office in Paris, selected particularly innovative and promising projects out of the fifty projects submitted. The decision was made to concentrate on a few wide-ranging and long term schemes, developed in several countries or intended for replication on a large scale. So while Armenia, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Uganda, Senegal and Tunisia are currently involved in the selected projects, in due course all the countries where Orange is present could reproduce them.

The Foundation, which firmly believes in digital tools’ potential in educational innovation and developing new apprenticeship techniques, has chosen to focus on projects in education and training this year.

The Committee renewed its support for the NGO Libraries Without Borders (Bibliothèques Sans Frontières), through the Foundation’s “Digital Education in Libraries” project, which aims to translate and adapt content from the Khan Academy, the online teaching platform that is revolutionising education in America, into French. There are thousands of educational videos, so each child can benefit from teaching that is rich in content and always available, using them according to their own timetable and individual needs. The Orange Foundation believes that this is a marvellous opportunity for education in Africa. In addition to the translation of 800 videos on Mathematics into French, the Foundation is supporting Libraries Without Borders in experimenting with using the platform in Cameroon, specifically targeting pupils who are struggling within the existing school system.

The Committee also came out in favour of supporting the “Schools in Senegal” (Ecoles au Sénégal) project. This initiative, proposed by a young Senegalese teacher, involves making lessons from the Senegalese curriculum available online for free, in video and text formats, to give pupils access to all of the lessons (teachers are often unable to complete the curriculum). Support from the Orange Foundation will enable “Schools in Senegal” to complete uploading the Maths curriculum for the final school year and improve the quality of the videos. “Claroline Connect & FLE” is another online education project, dedicated to teaching French as a foreign language for higher education using an MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) platform. In a number of countries, pupils accessing higher education experience difficulty because of their imperfect knowledge of the teaching language: French. Developed in Tunisia, the project aims to remedy this problem though partnerships with Sfax University and the Virtual University of Tunis. The various shared training resources offered by the MOOCs mean that students can personalise their learning environment and path. Following a pilot phase, the intention is to extend the project across the French-speaking world.

Kumusha takes Wiki” is a multi-country project which aims remedy the deficit in information on African culture, heritage and environment found online. The project involves encouraging local populations to contribute to developing communication and information about their communities (villages, town-quarters, suburbs, etc.). The content created will then be available through an online platform, which could feed the Wikipedia site.

The Armenian Eye Care Project, the final proposal selected, involves creating an online training platform for health professionals in ophthalmology. The training tools, comprising a digital manual, videos and online tests, will be available in Armenian, Russian and English.
