Romania: spreading digital education in rural areas

The Orange Foundation in Romania is broadening its scope of action. With the Digitaliada programme, it aims to develop digital education in rural areas. The goal: bringing digital technology closer to pupils.

In Romania, 95% of rural schools have internet access. But pupils don’t benefit from it directly, since it is mainly used by the administration. "Digital technology is already revolutionising other areas, like healthcare or the economy. But in Romania, education remains very traditional", explains Dana Deac, Chair of the Board of the Orange Romania Foundation.
The Orange Romania Foundation is launching the Digitaliada programme to offer pupils the benefits of a digital education. The project aims to improve pupils’ performance in certain subjects, including maths and IT, using new technologies. Around ten schools will be chosen for the pilot phase via a public offer.

They will be given the internet access and equipment they need, particularly up-to-date computers. The digital educational content will include computer games focused on maths and IT. These two subjects have been selected to help develop the pupils’ logical and analytical skills and thus facilitate their relationship to digital technology. "Digital education is the Orange Foundation’s priority. So we are delighted that Romania has started this digital education initiative, which we believe will provide excellent results." says Brigitte Audy, the General Secretary of the Orange Foundation.

The Digitaliada programme also responds to pupils’ and teachers’ strong interest in digital technology. If the results in the pilot schools are positive, the programme will be extended nationwide for the 2016-2017 school year.
