Spain: an online platform to reassure patients with autism

The Orange Spain Foundation has developed the Doctor TEA project, a website for patients with autism.

People with autism have trouble anticipating and understanding certain situations such as medical appointments, which can become traumatic experiences for them.

The Doctor TEA project is a free platform which helps people with autism become familiar with medical appointments in a doctor’s office or hospital. Mari Cruz is the mother of 11 year old Mario, who has autism. Every six months, they go to Gregorio Marañón Hospital. These visits are very stressful for Mari and her son, for whom the hospital is "a hostile environment." The site has made their lives easier: "I tried it out with Mario and it was wonderful. I used to draw pictograms to explain medical appointments to him. It took a lot of time and wasn’t very practical. Now I can go online and access all kinds of resources, like videos of hospital settings and cartoons, which he really likes."

The platform, launched in October 2014, drew 15,000 unique visitors, 7,500 of whom have autism, by January 2015. The site is in Spanish, but a similar online platform is available to French-speakers. The Santé orale (Oral Health) application developed by Sodhev, with support from the Orange Foundation, takes a similar approach to help people with autism prepare for a visit to the dentist. Another digital initiative to help families and medical professionals in their daily lives.
