Thierry Auriel, a volunteer with a big heart

Thierry Auriel has been volunteering with Mécénat Chirurgie cardiaque for several years. This organisation makes it possible for African children suffering from heart problems to have surgery in France. The children are looked after by host families, like Thierry’s, while they recover before going back home.

A few weeks ago, we talked to you about children receiving treatment in France thanks to the Chirurgie Mécénat Cardiaque association. Thierry had hosted a child from Côte d’Ivoire in his home while they were recovering after surgery before they returned home.

In November 2016, Thierry generously agreed to host Grace, a young girl from Côte d’Ivoire, before her operation and during her recovery. Thanks to this surgery, Grace will be able to lead a normal childhood of play, learning, and sport. During her stay, little Grace was supported by Thierry’s family every step of the way while she was in hospital. In a few weeks, Grace will go home to Côte d’Ivoire and her family with her whole life before her.

For Thierry, the decision to become a volunteer with the organisation came naturally: "I am lucky to live in France, I have an amazing family and a very happy life. Recognising this, I joined the organisation to help less fortunate children." While it is not always easy to look after a child who is far from their parents and who may not speak French, Thierry only focuses on the positive aspects of the experience: "something magical happens and the children’s courage helps us to put things into perspective and look on the bright side of life."

Building on these experiences, Thierry passes on his generosity and solidarity so that other children, like Grace, can be given an opportunity for life.
