Youth integration: a first for Metz!

The "Together for Youth Integration" programme aims to use digital technology to help young people seeking employment. For several weeks, pilot workshops have been organised in various towns by the French national council for local initiatives (CNML). In Metz a dozen young people took part last Thursday.

At the Foundation, we aim to make digital technology accessible as widely as possible, particularly to young people and women in challenging circumstances. We have created a number of digital education programmes. Through our Solidarity FabLabs and Digital Centres, beneficiaries can master the digital tools they need and rebuild confidence in their potential.
The Together for Youth Integration programme aims to help young job-seekers use digital tools to optimise their search for work.

Conceived with the French national council for local initiatives (CNML) and digital trainer Simplon, the programme includes 4 modules:

  • Managing my digital identity
  • Creating my CV
  • Finding a job online
  • Accessing my rights online

Since the spring these modules have been piloted at workshops in a number of local outreach offices in France. This is intermediate phase to gather feedback from the young people and adjust the training modules if necessary. In Metz, the "Finding a job online" module was trialled with a dozen participants on Thursday 23 June. After a presentation of online tools dedicated to job-hunting (job-boards, job-offer websites, etc.) the comments began to flow: "There are a lot of people on the pôle emploi website," notes Miléna of the French state employment agency; she is twenty and has been looking for work for several months. "I struggle to find offers that match my profile," adds Aymerick. Comments that give the trainers the opportunity to reiterate the importance of targeting the right offers in a search.

Theory and practice

After an hour and half of teaching and advice, the young participants are set a practical exercise: looking for work in the Metz area, they are asked to explain their search technique and how they apply to job offers. It’s not necessarily an easy task for these young people, not all of whom are adept with digital tools: "I don’t have a computer at home, so some sites and best practices are new to me," admits Miléna. After summing up the content, the workshop ends with a discussion of the training itself. "Without this workshop, I wouldn’t have known how to put a CV online on Pôle Emploi," says Miléna again. "It’s been very constructive for me."

The pilot phase of the programme will continue until the end of the summer in 5 cities. It will then be extended to 460 local outreach offices in France from the beginning of autumn.
