e-Mintza is a dynamic and customizable tool for augmentative and alternative communication designed for people with autism or people with difficulties in oral and written communication. Created through a partnership between the Orange Foundation Spain and the Dr. Carlos Elósegui of the Policlínica Gipuzkoa Foundation, e-Mintza helps users to communicate using tactile and multimedia technology, which is easily adaptable to users’ needs. It also empowers users to become more autonomous using a customized agenda tool.

e-Mintza (which in Basque language means electronic speech) is a free application that displays pictograms, associated images and sounds that encourage direct and easy communication. e-Mintza can also be customized with photos, pictograms, words or videos. With e-Mintza, users can interact using a touch screen on a tablet with a minimum size requirement, or they can use a conventional mouse connected to a computer.

It’s available in Spanish, English and French, and compatible for Windows, Mac, Android and iPad.

e-Mintza was developed by Nesplora, in close collaboration with the Gautena Autism Association, especially during the test phase. The testing with real users over a nine month period took into consideration many parameters such as the adaptation of pictograms, the size of photos, the motor capacity of users, real communicative uses, manageability and educational functionality. The current focus is on testing new features added after the user evaluations.

e-Mintza was co-financed by the Spanish Ministry of Trade, Industry and Commerce.
It’s available in Spanish, English and French.
